Tern is good at getting things right the first time. Sometimes that means delays in releasing new products. That’s why the new GSD cargo bike isn’t in shops yet. They’ve been busy crushing and mangling test bikes to be absolutely certain of safety. I think it’s worth the wait.
This bike is in demand, and while the first shipment has been sold out to dealers for quite some time, I still have a couple of GSDs in reserve. So if you have a friend who is interested, please refer them to us before they’re snapped up too.
Tern sent out this update last week:
We’ve made some big claims with the GSD, and we’re committing to building a bike that lives up to all of them.
Over the last six months, we’ve been busy putting the GSD through some brutal testing. While there are universal test standards for other bike categories, like city bikes and mountain bikes, there is no international standard for family-hauling utility bikes. So we’ve worked with Europe’s leading bike test lab, EFBE Prüftechnik GmbH, to create a custom test for the high weight capacities that we’ve specified for the GSD. To pass our custom test, the GSD frame has exceeded 10x the cycles and 3x the forces of a typical bicycle frame.
This testing has pushed us ~2 months behind our original schedule, but we’re now in full-steam-ahead production, with the first bikes leaving the factory in a few weeks. Please keep in mind that it takes time for the bikes to reach each market, quantities will be limited, and these initial production runs are sold out.
But, it will be worth the wait. Nobody wants them in your hands more than us—we’re sorry for the delay.
